PML Enhanced with a Self-Adaptive Goal-Oriented hp-Finite Element Method: Simulation of Through-Casing Borehole Resistivity Measurements

چکیده
We describe the application of a Perfectly Matched Layer (PML) combined with a self-adaptive goal-oriented hp Finite Element (FE) method to the simulation of resistivity measurements. The adaptive refinements and fast convergence of the self-adaptive hp FE method enhance the performance of the PML and, thus, enable the accurate and efficient truncation of the computational domain in open domain problems. We apply this methodology to the simulation of axisymmetric through-casing resistivity measurements in a borehole environment that are typically used for the assessment of rock formation properties. Our numerical results confirm the accuracy and efficiency of our method and provide evidence of highly accurate and reliable simulations of borehole logging measurements in the presence of a conductive steel casing and material contrast of fourteen orders of magnitude in conductivity. Moreover, the combination of adaptivity and PML enables us to significantly reduce the size of the computational domain.

Goal-Oriented Self-Adaptive hp Finite Element Simulation of 3D DC Borehole Resistivity Simulations
In this paper we present a goal-oriented self-adaptive hp Finite Element Method (hp-FEM) with shared data structures and a parallel multi-frontal direct solver. The algorithm automatically generates (without any user interaction) a sequence of meshes delivering exponential convergence of a prescribed quantity of interest with respect to the number of degrees of freedom. The sequence of meshes i...

متن کاملTwo-Dimensional High-Accuracy Simulation of Resistivity Logging-While-Drilling (LWD) Measurements Using a Self-Adaptive Goal-Oriented hp Finite Element Method
We simulate electromagnetic (EM) measurements acquired with a logging-while-drilling (LWD) instrument in a borehole environment. The measurements are used to assess electrical properties of rock formations. Logging instruments as well as rock formation properties are assumed to exhibit axial symmetry around the axis of a vertical borehole. The simulations are performed with a self-adaptive goal...
متن کاملhp-HGS strategy for inverse 3D DC resistivity logging measurement simulations
In this paper we present a twin adaptive strategy hp-HGS for solving inverse problems related to 3D DC borehole resistivity measurement simulations. The term ”simulation of measurements” is widely used by the geophysical community. A quantity of interest, voltage, is measured at a receiver electrode located in the logging instrument. We use the self-adaptive goal-oriented hp-Finite Element Meth...
متن کاملParallel hp-Finite Element Simulations of 3D Resistivity Logging Instruments
We simulate electromagnetic (EM) measurements obtained by using one transmitter and one receiver antenna in a borehole environment. The measurements are used to assess electrical properties of rock formations. We have started from a problem where logging instruments as well as rock formation properties are assumed to exhibit axial symmetry around the axis of a vertical borehole. The initial com...
